Located at 70 Pine Street, this limestone-clad Art Deco skyscraper is the tallest building in Lower Manhattan and the among the top 50 worldwide. The skyscraper originally had double-decker elevators that served two floors at a time.
70 Pine Street was first owned by Cities Service Company. For many years it was home to the much beleaguered American International Group, later renamed American International Underwriters. In the midst of scandal over a multi-billion dollar bailout and unscrupulous bonuses, AIG sold the Art Deco gem and along with a nearby building to developer Youngwoo & Associates and South Korea's Kumho Investment Bank. The building is being used for offices, with condos planned for the upper floors.
