July 9 is the birthday of architect and designer Michael Graves, famous for whimsical buildings that incorporate classical details like columns and pediments. Graves is also known for his household product designs, which range from teapots to pavilions. After a serious illness left him paralyzed in 2003, Graves became an important advocate for universal design.
