January 20 is the birthday of one of America's most important and prolific architects. Born in 1872, Julia Morgan pioneered the way for women in architecture. During her long career, Julia Morgan designed more than 700 homes, churches, office buildings, hospitals, stores, and educational buildings.

Many years went into the construction of Julia Morgan's lavish Hearst Castle in San Simeon, California.
